It's essential to know the terminology for land divisions when doing research based on place in Hawaiʻi. Know the following for your location:

• Mokupuni = Island or County (e.g. Oʻahu)

• Moku = District or Zone (e.g. Kona)

• Ahupuaʻa = Division or Section (e.g. Kapālama)

• ʻIli = Smaller division within ahupuaʻa (e.g. Niuhelewai stream)
