September 17th is the birthday of the United States government. On September 17, 1787, the thirty-nine delegates to the Philadelphia Convention completed and signed the U.S. Constitution. Our Constitution is the oldest written constitution of all of the world's nations.
Constitution Day commemorates the birth of our government as well as the ideals that make us Americans. It is celebrated on or near the seventeenth day of September each year.
Constitution Day was established by law in 2004 with the passage of an amendment by Senator Robert Byrd to the Omnibus spending bill. This law was announced in 2005 by the U.S. Department of Education. Department of Education in 2005. Educational institutions that receive federal funding are required to present educational programs about the Constitution each Constitution Day.
