At night I sleep in abandoned cars
That smell of loss and sweat.
I lie inside these paupers' tombs
Just one among a crowd
On a narrow, dead-end street
Where no U-turns are allowed.
I'm like the child whose tongue
Is frozen on the ice--
No one can bear to look
As he struggles to free himself.
Except, of course, for each of you
Who talk but fail to see that
You could become the wanderer
And sleep right next to me.
