The DVDs below were funded by a Diversity and Equity Initiative (DEI) Award from the University of Hawaii Office of Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity (SEED).  HCC Library received a DEI grant in 2014 for "Humanizing the Homeless: Library Materials to Promote Understanding."

DVDs are held at the HCC Library Circulation Counter and may be checked out for 7 days.

TED Talks: Becky Blanton - The Year I Was Homeless

After the death of her father, writer/journalist Becky Blanton quit her job and took her pet cat and dog on a cross-country road trip in her van. But when depression set in and her freelance job ended, what began as an adventure quickly turned into homelessness. Becky describes the invisible working homeless, the effects of negative perceptions, and the power of hope.

The Harvard Square Homeless Shelter is the only one of its kind in the U.S. Completely student-run, it brings together the most privileged and the neediest of society.

Films on Demand - Streaming Videos

Films on Demand is a web-based digital video delivery service that allows you to view streaming videos anytime, anywhere. 

When you access Films on Demand from off campus, you will be prompted to log in. Please use the UH Web Login Service and enter your UH user name and password.

Homeless teens describe life on the street and how homelessness has affected their families. Journalist Liz Murray shares how she went from being a homeless teen to a Harvard student, then to a successful career.

After eviction threats in Papakolea in 1930, there were tent cities and homeless camps in Honolulu.

Homelessness: the Housing First Approach
Presents the Housing First Approach which first obtains housing for homeless citizens, then assists them with services to address the problems that led to their homelessness. This program was used in Portland, Oregon, and in this film is attempted by the city of Victoria, British Columbia. (Housing First has also been proposed in Hawai‘i.)

Houseless in Waiʻanae

Presents interviews with the houseless community in Waiʻanae. Also available on DVD at HonCC Library- DVD 0388.
