The DVDs below were funded by a Diversity and Equity Initiative (DEI) Award from the University of Hawai‘i Office of Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity (SEED). HCC Library received a DEI grant in 2014 for "Humanizing the Homeless: Library Materials to Promote Understanding."
DVDs are held at the HCC Library Circulation Counter and may be checked out for 7 days.
After the death of her father, writer/journalist Becky Blanton quit her job and took her pet cat and dog on a cross-country road trip in her van. But when depression set in and her freelance job ended, what began as an adventure quickly turned into homelessness. Becky describes the invisible working homeless, the effects of negative perceptions, and the power of hope.

Presents the Housing First Approach which first obtains housing for homeless citizens, then assists them with services to address the problems that led to their homelessness. This program was used in Portland, Oregon, and in this film is attempted by the city of Victoria, British Columbia. (Housing First has also been proposed in Hawai‘i.)
