Letters written by Anne Taft Powlison to her son Peter, from December 7th, 1941 to January 1st, 1942. Letters begin with an account of the Pearl Harbor attack as seen from the family home, Hilltop House, in Lanikai, Hawaii, which overlooks the Kaneohe Naval Air Station.

Curve of the Hook is the long-awaited book on the life and research of Yosihiko Sinoto, senior anthropologist at the Bishop Museum. For nearly six decades, Dr. Sinoto conducted field research on every island group across the Pacific. In the middle decades of the twentieth century, Hawaii changed rapidly from a conservative oligarchy firmly controlled by a Euro-American elite to arguably the most progressive part of the United States. Spearheading the shift, tens of thousands of sugar, pineapple, and longshore workers eagerly joined the left-led International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU) and challenged their powerful employers.

Hawaii's sugar industry enjoyed great success for most of the twentieth century, and its influence was felt across a broad spectrum: economics, politics, the environment, and society. This success was made possible, in part, through the liberal use of Hawaii's natural resources. Chief among these was water, which was needed in enormous quantities to grow and process sugarcane. Between 1856 and 1920, sugar planters built miles of ditches, diverting water from almost every watershed in Hawaii.

A little over a century ago, bubonic plague - the same Black Death that decimated medieval Europe - arrived on the shores of Hawaii just as the islands were about to become a U.S. territory. This is the story of that fearful visitation and its fiery climax.
