A Guide to Library Research

Step-by-step guide with tutorials on the basics of research. Learn about library and online resources.

Types of Books

The HonCC library has many fiction and non-fiction books physically available in the library as well as through ebook databases.

Fiction books are based on the writers imagination. There are many genres in fiction including mystery, science fiction, historical fiction, horror, romance, fantasy, crime thrillers, and many more.

Nonfiction books are based on fact and are about real people, places, scientific studies, and events. There are two types of nonfiction, literary and informative.

Literary nonfiction tells a true story in a narrative format, similar to fiction, but is 100% based in fact, otherwise it is considered fiction. Literary nonfiction provides facts in an entertaining way. Examples of literary nonfiction books include biographies, autobiographies, essays, and even true crime books.

Informative nonfiction books are written to inform and tend to be straight forward. They typically follow a structure to provide that information: sequence of events, compare and contrast, cause and effect, problem and solution, and description. Informative nonfiction includes textbooks, manuals, encyclopedias, or any other type of factual informative texts.
